USES - Sulfonation resulting in AOS surfactants (See code 1563)
- Aromatics (benzene, naphthalene or phenol) alkylation
using large excess of the aromatic to minimize polyalkyla
tion & olefin oligomerization & also serving as reaction sol
vent. Reaction T = 50 - 100C. catalyzed by heterogeneous
catalysts such as acidified clays, zeolites & sulfonated
resins. After further derivatization often via sulfonation the
products find use mainly as surfactants
-- The most water-soluble short-chain deriv. are used as hy
drotopes & wetting agents
-- Alkylbenzene sulfonates derived from 1-dodecene enter
the aq.-detergent market
-- Those made from 1-hexadecene & up are used as oil-so
luble detergents in various lubricating oils
