Method for prepg the Zr-Ce composite oxide comprising Zr & Ce at wt ratio of 51 to 95:49 to 5 in terms of Zr oxide & Ce oxide, said composite oxide having a specific surface area of > 50 square.m/g, wherein said oxide is capable of maintai ning a specific surface area of > 20 square.m/g even after heating at 1100C for 6 hours, comprising - Reacting under heating a mixt comprising Zr hydroxide powders having an av particle size of 0.5-50 micro.m & Ce sol having an av colloidal particle size of 3-100 nm, in the presence of 5-10 moles of nitric acid per mole of Ce in mixt - Adding a base & reacting a resulting mixt to precipitate a prodt, & calcining at 500-1000C |
