Method for the concn & sepn of free sterols from a feed source which comprises sterol-contg material & saponifia ble material, which method comprises - Providing a first, rotary, horizontal, thin film apparatus having a one end & other end & having 2 external jackets to provide a first, internal thin film reaction zone & second, internal thin film evaporation zone - Introducing feed source into first zone - Introducing aq alkali soln into the first zone to saponify said saponifiable material at a controlled T & for selected time to provide a saponification reaction mixt of an alkali soap, free sterols, water & light hydrocarbons - Heating at controlled T, the reaction mixt from the first zone reaction in the second evaporation zone - Withdrawing from second zone, a light & vapor mixt compri sing water & light hydrocarbons - Withdrawing from second zone, a liquid slurry mixt compri sing an alkali soap & free sterols - Heating liquid slurry mixt to separate & obtain free sterol & alkali soap prodt |
