- Reacting toluene with NO3H in a single liquid phase reac tion in a first reaction zone at an elev. T to provide a single phase mononitrotoluene-contg prodt mixt., using a reaction mixt that is free of SO4H2 & that comprises molar NO3H/ toluene = 20:1-30:1, said reaction being conducted using a combination of fresh & recycled aq NO3H, said combina tion having a NO3H concn < 75% based upon the wt of NO3H plus water in said dilute aq NO3H - Phase-separating said single phase mononitrotoluene- contg prodt mixt into 2 phases by cooling said mononitro toluene-contg prodt mixt to a T < said elev. T in order to providean organic phase & an aq phase comprising major amount of said water, & recycling at least a portion of said aq phase into said first reaction zone in order to incorporate said recycled aq NO3H into said reaction mixt - Reacting, in a second reaction zone, said mononitrotoluene in said organic phase with concd NO3H having an acid concn > 90% by wt., at a second elev. T, using molar NO3H/mononitrotoluene = 10:1-20:1, in order to provide said dinitrotoluene in a dinitrotoluene-contg prodt mixt, wherein the amount of 2,4-dinitrotoluene in said mixt < 81% based upon total amount of 2,6-dinitrotoluene + 2,4-dinitro toluene in said mixt |
