An acidified aq stable dispersion comprising an exfoliated silicate derived from a silicate having a layer lattice structure in which the silicate layer units have a thickness 5-25 angstroems & are separated by exchaengeable cations, the cationic exchange capacity is 30-200 millequiv./100 gr of the silicate having a layer lattice structure, & wherein said layer silicate material has been exfoliated in an acidified aq medium with a cationic group-contg polymer or a polymer having functional groups which can be post-reacted to form cationic groups
