A method of purifying clay contg impurities comprising: Grinding of the clay to particle size < 500 micro.m; Slurrying the clay & impurities in water; Sequentially treating the slurry by - Removing a portion of the particles in the slurry to provide first partially purified clay; wherein > 95% of particles are < 100 micro.m - Removing additional particles from the first partially puri fied clay to provide second partially purified clay having > 95% of particles < 70 micro.m - Removing additional particles from second partially purified clay to provide third partially purified clay having > 95% of particles < 50 micro.m - Removing additional particles from third clay to provide fourth partially purified clay having > 95% of particles < 40 micro.m - Treating fourth partially purified clay to remove > 95% of the clay interlayer multivalent cations & replacing said cations with monovalent cations to provide monovalent partially purified clay (I) - Subjecting (I) to centrifugal force to separate particles the refrom having size > 10 micro.m & such that > 95% of the remaining particles have size < 6 micro.m to form said purified clay |
