Formed from steel pots for use in primary production & sec. refining as a layer of heat insulating refractory underlying a bottom C electrode, comprising a monolithic stamping of unfired shaped elements of a finely granulated powder having a high alumina content, said stamping formed under a pressure of 600 bar, said powder obtained from Al scrap recovery & salt slags & having the following comp in the following amounts based on dried wt.: - Al2O3 (40-90%) - AlN (0.1-25%) - MgO (4-20%) - Silica (0.5-15%) - CaO (0.1-15%) - Al (0.1-10%) - Si (0.1-10%) - Fe2O3 (0.1-5%) - C (< 5%) - F (< 5%) - Na2O (0.1-5%) - K2O (0.1-2%) - TiO2 (0.1-2%) - Others (< 5%) - Loss on ignition (< 10%) Said shaped elements in the form selected from: pellets, briquetes & normal shaped bricks & being thermally treated to < 5% annealing loss, & said monolithic stamping having a final particle size & distribution that causes the stamping to be resistant to 100% infiltration by electrolyte melt |
