An alkylation process - (A) Contacting in a reactor comp comprising (I) an alkene of > 2C, (II) an alkylbenzene having at least one H atom on the alpha-C atom of alkyl group, (III) Na & K alkylation cata lyst compn comprising: (a) fresh Na & K alkylation catalyst compn either preformed or formed in situ, by a process which comprises heating a mixt formed from comp compri sing (i) an alkylbenzene having at least one H atom on the alpha C atom of the alkyl group & (ii) a mixt of (1) Na metal &/or organo-Na compd & (2) K metal &/or organo-K compd in Na/K = 0.1-10.0 as well as K/alkylbenzene = 0.01-0.3, at one or more T at which a fresh Na & K alkylation catalyst compn is formed & (IV) water, in amounts such that reaction mixt is formed in which: Water/K < 0.1 - (B) Maintaining the reaction mixt of (A) at one or more T in the range of 100-180C at which alkylation occurs & a reac tion mass comprising (i) a longer chain alkylbenzene prodt & (ii) residual Na & K catalyst is produced, & removing at least a portion of the longer chain alkylbenzene prodt from said reaction mass |
