Fine-celled foam material stable at high T & high stiffness having d. 10 - 600 kg/cubic m comprising PE & PP produced in 2 reactive process steps & one foaming step: (a) First reactive process step including a preliminary reac tion including reacting a powdery PP-PE mixt. in the solid phase at 55 - 105C in continuous screw mixers with 0.05 - 2 % of bifunct., ethylenically unsatd. monomers in the presen ce of 0.01 - 0.85 % of thermal decompn free-radical forming agent which are acyl peroxides etc which have half-life of 0.2 - 5 min. at reaction T &, after the partial reaction, 5 - 35 % of monomers & 10 - 40 % of free radical agent being contained unchanged in mixt (b) Second reactive process step including coupling of un reacted reactants in an extruder at 195 - 270C & adding 0.3 - 8 % of blowing agents (c) The Reaction mixt. being discharged with foaming from the extruder & removed from extruder as foamed semi-fini shed sheet & immediately cut into particle foam segments |
