An isolated & purified protein derivable from the "Purified Protein Deriv." (PPD) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (herein 12-kDa PPD protein), which protects mice against experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) & stimulates PPD-specific T lymphocytes, said isolated & purified protein having MW 12 kDa when analyzed by SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions, comprising the following AA seq. obtained by N-terminal analysis: - Ala-Lys-Val-Asn-Ile-Lys-Pro-Leu-Glu-Asp-Lys-Ile-Leu-Val Gln-Ala-Asn (residues 2-18 of SEQ ID NO:1) & salts, functional deriv. & active fractions thereof which protect mice against EAE & stimulate PPD-specific T lymphocytes |
