Method for the isolation of sterols from sulfate pulping process tall oil pitch - Saponifying the said pitch - Extracting the neutral fraction from saponified pitch - Blending a hydrocarbon soln of the neutrals with an alc. solvent at T > crystallization T of sterol to produce a hydro carbon/neutrals/alc. soln - Adding water of T > than soln. T to separate into an upper organic phase & lower alc./water phase - Removing lower alc./water phase - Allowing remaining upper phase to cool to 20-30C to produce sterol crystals - Recovering said crystals from cooled soln - Washing said crystals with a hydrocarbon solvent to obtain sterol yield > 60% & purity > 90% |
