MECHANISM OF ACTION |
Chloroform is formed when drinking water is disinfected with chlorine. It is formed by action of HOCl on humic acid found in water Chloroform's probable human carcinogenicity is of the "Threshold carcinogen" type. Chloroform does not directly damage DNA. Instead it harms cells through oxidative generation of reactive & toxic metabolites, particularly PHOSGENE. Tissue damage from these metabolites is followed by regenerative cell proliferation, & this rapid cell proliferation increases the chance that cancer will form in damaged tissue |
