Fluorescent probes that are excited by visible light have been shown to selectively detect Zn (II) cation at physiological pH. The compds are expected to offer a useful tool for measuring Zn(II) concn in living cells. To fashion the new probes (azacrownfluorone), the team designed & synthesized the fluorophore, coupling it directly to macrocyclic polyamine. Fluorescence is not affected by high concn of Na, K, Ca or Mg suggesting that the probes are specific for Zn |
