TECHNOLOGY The conventional artificial kidney removes toxic wastes from blood via dialysis mimicking the filtration action of the kidney - performed in region called GLOMERULUS - but none of its other functions. In normal kidneys, the next step is carried out in the proximal TUBULE region, populated with cells, that return to the blood "good" ions & molecules that escape in the ultrafiltrate. The tubule cells also have metabolic & immunologic roles
The researchers grew a monolayer of PIG TUBULE CELLS on the inner surface of immunoisolating POLYSULFONE hollow fibers coated with an adhesion protein that anchors the cells. They produced a BIOHYBRID artificial kidney by positioning a cartridge of the tissue-engineered hollow fibers in tandem with a conventional ultrafiltration unit.
In animal models of kidney failure, the group showed that the tubule cells selectively pick up "glucose, water, salt etc" from the filtrate & return them to the blood
