ECOLOGY | The researchers conclude that "daily human exposure to Cu & Pb from municipal water systems may be grossly overestimated if the majority of tap water ingested is filtered through coffee |
MECHANISM OF ACTION | The researchers believe that negatively charged organic acids & other functional groups in the coffee grounds bind to the positevely charged heavy-metal ions |
TECHNOLOGY |
The process of brewing coffee can rid drinking water of dissolved heavy metals. These metal contaminants can originate from natural sources as well as from storage tanks, solder, & Cu pipes. Tests showed that filtered coffee removes 78-90% of Cu & Pb from tap water. The deeper the bed of ground coffee in the automatic-drip coffeemaker, the more effective the removal of heavy metals. The process may also capture other heavy metals, including Hg, Cd & Zn. |
