Process for prepn aldehyde by hydroformylation of an ole fin of > 3 C in hydroformylation stage at 50 - 1000 bar & at 50 - 180C by H/CO gas mixt. in presence of uncomplexed rhodium catalyst homogeneously dissolved in reaction medium, extracting the catalyst from mixt. discharged from hydroformylation stage of reaction & into an aq. phase by means of an aq. soln of a N-contg complexing agent selected from group: sulfonated pyridines etc., thereafter isolating aldehyde from resulting extracted & discharged reaction mixt. & recycling the extracted rhodium catalyst to hydroformylation stage, the IMPROVEMENT comprising: - Feeding the aq. rhodium-contg extract to a separate pre carbonylation stage where it is subjected to carbonylation in the presence of water-insoluble organic liquid & CO at 50 - 1000 bar & 50 - 180C, separating the mixt. discharged from precarbonylation stage into an organic phase contg the main part of the rhodium & an aq. phase contg. the com plexing agent, & then feeding the organic phase contg un complexed rhodium catalyst into hydroformylation stage |
