- Dihydro-Benzopyran-2,5,6,8-tetra-Me-7-OH-2-COOH (Anti
oxidant function)
- Piperazine-4-[C6H4-NH-C(=NH)-(2'-thiophenyl)] (NO produc
tion inhibitor function)
CLINICAL STUDY The compd reduced brain damage in mice & other rodents whose blood supply to the brain had been cut off
DESCRIPTION The compd could be administered as much as 8 hours after the head injury & still protect against nerve damage
INDICATION'S Protection nerve cells from damage after a stroke or head injury
MECHANISM OF ACTION Both NO & reactive O moieties such as superoxide build up in the cells of the brain when the blood supply is cut off, as happens in stroke or certain head injuries. Both agents can kill the cells; the agents can also react with each other to produce peroxynitrite (ONOO anion), which is more damaging to nerve cells.
The researchers have produced a bifunctional molecule by joining an ANTIOXIDANT molecule with NO INHIBITOR molecule
